At nine o’clock this morning this vessel was in trouble. The Lloyds surveyor would not give it clearance to sail because the Alternators had been given a restriction order for limited output only. The windings were down to just half a megohm. But by six in the evening the reading was up to 200 megohms and the restriction was lifted.

This motor was quoted $160,000.00 for a rewind. Instead it was given an Ayrodev process that extended its life for five years. The cost? $5000.00.

Or take the alternators from this power station. The 11 KW machines would conventionally have needed a rewind taking eight months but they were out and back in just ten days.

So what’s happening here and how can it help you?

Many electrical maintenance problems are due to the incipient breakdown of the insulation. Then the plant engineer is faced with a dangerously low insulation value and a machine that’s needed back in service as fast and as cheaply as possibly, with just enough megohms to see it through to the next annual shutdown.

Usually he’d clean the windings with a cleaning fluid to raise a few megohms, which might disappear the next day. Then he’d spray on varnish or paint. Right? Afraid not! The cleaning fluid will leave behind an oily film on the windings, compromising the performance of the varnish or paint, and it does nothing to remove the soluble salts. When the machine fails to respond to this treatment the only course is a costly rewind.
